Marion - an eco-activist alpinist who cleaned the Everest

Don't you think that people can do the best, also when they are working? Some people are very dedicated and want to help the world. One of these people is undoubtedly Marion Chaygneaud-Dupuy, who won the 2019 Terre de Femmes award from the Fondation Yves Rocher for her admirable work to help clear Mount Everest of tons and tons of garbage.

Marion is a mountaineering guide and eco-activist who was interested in the Himalayas since many years ago when she was a teenager. As an adult, she traveled to India and Tibet, where she has lived and worked as a mountain guide for more than 17 years. She has also discovered the beauty of life in Tibet, another way of living and Buddhism.

She has a deep connection to the natural world. Nature is a vital part of her life that helps her feel alive. That is why she wants to do her part to help others get the best possible experience. Her connection to nature began when she was a child. She would play in the forest and learn the names of trees, plants, and animals.

Climbing Everest is something that has changed her life. This is the reason she has decided to dedicate part of her life to it: “Climbing Everest should offer one of the purest interactions between humans and the natural world. But in 2013, when I reached the top, I realized that the mountain had been damaged by 30 years of expeditions. I estimated that nearly 10 tonnes of waste had been discarded at the peaks alone! I was utterly shocked. I’ve been passionate about nature since I was a little girl,”

The pollution that affects the Himalayas is very critical and influences the drinking water used by around 2 billion people. It is not only about protecting nature but also about improving the quality of life. After founding the "Clean Everest" project, he convinced local authorities to support his project and gave him 50 yaks to help transport the waste up the mountainside. In this way, Marion and her team had cleaned up a whopping 8.5 tons of trash and debris.

The result is that Marion was able to win the 2019 Terre de Femmes award given by the Fondation Yves Rocher. Unbelievably, she has a more impressive mission: finish clearing Everest and then move to the entire Himalayan range.

We can only hope that Marion continues her mission and that others follow in her footsteps in the snow. Some people continue to make us believe in the best of humanity with their kindness, effort, and desire to make the world a better place.
