FIFA celebrates ten years of Carbon Management

FIFA started this journey ten years ago, during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. They decided to start monitoring and measuring carbon emissions to reduce them over the years by following the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the 2020 Agenda (now is 2030).

FIFA has based its strategy on three steps.

1) Measure the impact

To have a better understanding of carbon management, it was necessary to measure the level of greenhouse gas emissions that are attributed to its activities, its main competitions, and events. The help of climate experts was needed to create an effective working system.

2) Reduce the impact

FIFA, in collaboration with organizing committees, local authorities and commercial affiliates, has developed and implemented a series of reduction measures over the years. Just one example: the stringent sustainability certification required for the new stadia.

3) Offset the impact

FIFA has decided to offset its controlled and unavoidable emissions. The main emissions come from low-carbon projects located in the host country of the tournament. The remaining emissions are offset by the reduction of emissions certified by the United Nations by the Clean Development Mechanism.

There is also another crucial point FIFA works on: "collaboration for impact." It has created many events with its affiliates to engage stakeholders on climate change and sustainability. Furthermore, in 2016, FIFA was the first sports federation to participate in the Climate Neutral Now campaign.

It has also aimed to contribute to projects that benefit local communities through employment, training, and support.

FIFA is an international organization well-known worldwide, so everything it is doing has a vast impact. In this case, it could be the right example to follow and emulate. Organizations and institutions, but also small clubs or associations, can be easily reached.

An organization like FIFA can have a lot of influence even outside the world of sport. It can create even more impact to achieve the zero.net effect. Sustainability is one of the main goals to develop.
