AS SUSTAINABLE AS POSSIBLE (ASAP)

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) launched the International

Federation Sustainability Project in 2016 to get an overview of sustainability initiatives. Many case studies were carried out and some of them show the best practices of the National Olympic Committees (NOCs). They are part of a strategic support system provided to the Olympic Movement through the IOC sustainability strategy.

These case studies are aligned with one or more of the United Nations (UN) Framework of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which provide a common framework for organizations to explain how they plan to contribute to sustainable development and address the main global challenges of sustainability.

As Sustainable As Possible (ASAP) is a mentoring and development program of Europe-based National Olympic Committees (NOCs) on sustainability issues. Building bridges between organizations, the program that began in 2020 and will run over three years, aims to guide mentees in creating integrated sustainability strategies while allowing mentors to refine their own.

The ASAP consortium is made up of six NOCs: Germany, Denmark, Finland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Czech. The program is co-financed by Erasmus + European Union Program.

The project has two main goals. First, create a practical approach to sustainability that mentees can implement while allowing mentors the opportunity to expand their expertise. Second, share this knowledge and experience with other sports organizations to maximize the positive impact of this process.

ASAP will focus on three main groups of activities:

• Train managers and create basic education materials that could then be reused for NOCs and general sports organizations to establish baseline conditions for a sustainability strategy;

• Development of sustainability strategies for apprentices including the organizational level, projects, and events. Mentors in the process will be able to refine their strategies and work together on creating templates to tackle a sustainability strategy;

• Communication and advocacy to raise awareness about the immediate need for a sustainability approach and its benefits, share the results of the project establishing national and international leadership in sport.

The results of ASAP are expected to have a direct impact on participating organizations, but leave a legacy for other coordinating organizations to support their paths in sustainable development.
